At horecatrends.com we spot many national and international trends on a daily basis. We pick the most interesting ones to write about, the other trends we use in our weekly column ‘Trends we spotted this week’.

With this week links to articles about amongst other the PINKTOBER campaign from Hard Rock International, this year in collaboration with chef Dominique Crenn. And a social initiative in Rotterdam, ‘Heat and Eat’.

Hôtel Plaza Athénéé has teamed up with the talented fine art photographer Gray Malin for a photo shoot with dogs, great images on ‘My Dogs from Paris’! And in San Francisco restaurant Dogue serves a tasting menu for your dog. Some dogs have so much luxury around them.

Interesting initiative in London where Head Room Café brings awareness and access to mental health support. And ghost kitchen chain Casper from Belgium recently also launched in the Dutch cities The Hague and Rotterdam.

Last week, the hotels Moxy the Hague and Residence Inn by Marriott the Hague were officially opened, located in the Muzentoren in the city center. And chef Bart De Pooter opened his plant-based restaurant WILDn at the Sapphire House Antwerp.

The last week of September New York enjoyed ‘La vie en rose’ by Maison Valentino, a great example of going ‘Pink all the way’. And OneThird developed a scanner to determine the ripeness of avocados and received a voucher from the Foundation Together Against Food Waste to test this on the shop floor.

Hard Rock International celebrates 23rd annual PINKTOBER campaign by partnering with chef Dominique Crenn

Hard Rock International continues to support breast cancer awareness and research with its 23rd annual PINKTOBER campaign. Taking place throughout the month of October, Hard Rock locations around the world are participating in fundraising efforts supporting the Hard Rock Heals Foundation®, the charitable arm of Hard Rock®, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society and local charities. Last year, Hard Rock raised over $700,000, representing the largest amount the company has fundraised since the inception of the program back in 2000.

Kicking off this year’s PINKTOBER activities is a special partnership and highly-anticipated dinner series with world-renowned chef and breast cancer survivor, Dominique Crenn. Hard Rock will also offer PINKTOBER limited-edition menu items, specially designed merchandise, a song writing contest and more. More details in their press release, link in the title.

Initiative in Rotterdam | ‘Heat and Eat’

Sorry this is a Dutch link but in short: two companies, Hotspot hutspot and talentfabriek010, have launched ‘Heat and Eat’. Some 20 Heat and Eat restaurants and coffeeshops are already participating in this initiative and any restaurant or coffee shop can join. At these restaurants or coffee shops, the heating is on anyway and you are also welcome without ordering anything. If you are lucky, you will find a free voucher for a cup of coffee or soup, or maybe even a meal, near the cash register. Paid for by someone who can spare it, and is happy to give it to you! This organization is appealing to those who can afford to donate. Every restaurant can join, more information on their website.

The initiative resembles what we also saw a while ago: caffe sospeso from Italy and in America the ‘random acts of kindness’ has been a household word in the hospitality industry for years. We even recently wrote about an example from Zaxbys.

Gray Malin’s Dogs at Hôtel Plaza Athénée | My Dogs of Paris

Hôtel Plaza Athénéé has teamed up with the talented fine art photographer Gray Malin for a photo shoot with dogs. Dogs living the high life in Paris, at their terrace, stairs, balcony’s and in cars right in front of the hotel. Check out the great images in the article in the link in the title. My Dogs of Paris prints really made us smile, check out more limited-edition prints in this series, take a look at the website of Gray Malin.

Avocado scanner OneThird gets voucher against food waste

Another Dutch article but an interesting initiative, the video below is in English. Dutch people eat about 38 kilotons of avocados per year (source: CBS). According to OneThird, about 5.7 kilotons of avocados are wasted annually, before they reach consumers…. OneThird developed a scanner to determine the ripeness of avocados and received a voucher from the Foundation Together Against Food Waste to test this on the shop floor. In an earlier, successful pilot, the avocado scanner was deployed at a large retailer’s distribution center to detect ‘less ripe’, ‘ripe’ and ‘overripe’ batches of avocados. However, the question remains what ripeness consumers want and when they want to use the avocado. By monitoring ripeness in shop and communicating it to customers, OneThird aims to reduce waste. Head Room Café in London | Dedicated to bettering your mental health

Head Room Café brings awareness and access to mental health support. Interesting initiative we spotted on the website of Secret London, link in the title. Head Room Café in Golders Green seems to be a cute coffee shop that is actually much more than a place to stop for a cappuccino and a slice of cake. The social enterprise café is actively helping to remove the stigma of mental illness, while encouraging guests to talk openly about mental health. More details in the title.

Restaurant Dogue in San Francisco serves a tasting menu for your dog

The three-course meal is only available on Sundays for walk-ins (the rest of the week, Dogue sells Parisian pastries and ‘doguccinos’). While the dishes rotate frequently based on what’s in season, your pup can expect items like organic beef chuck steak with fermented carrots and beets, as well as green-lipped mussels with fermented carrots and wheatgrass. Owner of Dogue, Massarweh even consulted with his vet to ensure that everything is complete, balanced and made with dog-safe ingredients. More details in the link to the website of Robb Report (in the title). As stated on the website of Dogue they have a fresh food  philosophy and as you watch the images of their dog food you have to admit that you don’t eat that fancy on a daily base!

Ghost kitchen chain Casper launched in The Hague and Rotterdam

Casper, the fastest-growing ghost kitchen chain in Belgium, has opened its two first Dutch kitchens – at Theresiastraat 139A in The Hague and Pannekoekstraat 81A in Rotterdam. Find out more about Casper in our article or on their website (link in title). Casper customers can order from 10 virtual restaurants. The menu offers something for everyone: from Gloria’s pasta and Barney’s burgers to healthy salads, bagels or a fully vegan dish from the Vegetarian Butcher. Ordering can be done directly at the virtual restaurants or through Casper, where the different brands can be combined into one order in one delivery.

Recently opened: Moxy the Hague and Residence Inn by Marriott the Hague

Last week, the hotels Moxy the Hague and Residence Inn by Marriott the Hague were officially opened. The spaces in the Muzentoren have had a redesign by International Hotel Capital Partners and are transformed from offices into two hotels with a total of over 300 rooms. The hotels are located in the Resident area in downtown The Hague. Moxy the Hague has 185 hotel rooms. The hotel also has a lounge with 140 seats. Residence Inn by Marrtiott the Hague is designed for longer stays and features 127 studios and flats with fully equipped kitchens. The hotel is linked to Moxy the Hague to provide access to a shared bar. Link to the Residence Inn by Marriott website in the title.

WILDn by chef Bart De Pooter opened at Sapphire House Antwerp

Last week, Antwerp added a gastronomic address with restaurant WILDn. The long-awaited plant-based restaurant opened its doors at Sapphire House Antwerp. For this inspiring fine dining concept, Sapphire House Antwerp and Odyssey Hotel Group are collaborating with two-star chef Bart De Pooter. “It is the first restaurant to bring all-vegetable high-end gastronomy to the city of Antwerp,” says Bart De Pooter. We previously wrote about the arrival of WILDn and wish the chef and his team much pleasure and success in Antwerp.

The last week of September New York enjoyed ‘La vie en rose’ by Maison Valentino

Maison Valentino took over a bodega in Soho, as well as Dominique Ansel Bakery to treat New Yorkers to pink flower bouquets, special Valentino postcards, cronuts packed in pink boxes and more! Check out the article on ‘guest of a guest’, link in the title. Or watch the video in the Instagram post below.
