Beer glasses that communicate with the Glassify app
Glassify participating bars provide beer glasses with QR codes or NFC chips built into the base. Customers scanning these codes are invited to download the Glassify app, giving access to a range of features such as wallet-less pre-pay ordering and house promotions. Glassify also lets users buy each other drinks and find other participating bars nearby and, when the fun’s over, order a cab ride home. Glassify, from Weissbeerger, is available to download from the App Store or Google Play and can also be used to order non-alcoholic drinks.
Warre’s port Otima – Summer + port “a match made in heaven’
Past few weeks Horecatrends has been in Portugal and regularly enjoyed a port & tonic. A slightly sweeter version of the gin & tonic. Last week we received a press release about the Otima 10, a port that has to be served cold. The port is a delicate combination with desserts with hints of vanilla, orange or dark chocolate. A great combination with the soft caramel-like flavour of the Otima 10. In the press release they even talk of a ‘high port’ instead of a ‘high tea’.
Airbnb is going after business travellers.
Airbnb, the largest home sharing network with over two million listings worldwide, is newly targeting business travellers, the bread-and-butter clientele of hotels. An article at the New York Times gives some insights: Phocuswright, a travel research firm, noted that one in three leisure travellers in 2015 used private accommodations and 31 percent of travellers who used Airbnb in the last two years had used it for business. In the article also some responses from the hotel industry to these developments. Like for example the new just opened Moxy New Orleans, its second American Moxy hotel by Marriott International. Their answer: low prices, compact, keyless entrance via an app and communal spaces, like a full-service bar, grab-and-go food, games and plenty of outlets for charging electronic devices in the lobby.
Ever heard about Black Lime?
We never heard about black lime although now we read about it, we love to taste it! It’s dried lime. It’s a lime that has lost its water content, usually after having spent a majority of their drying time in the sun. They are used whole, sliced or ground, as a spice in Middle Eastern dishes. Originating in the Persian Gulf. Most probably we have tasted it once because it’s supposed to be popular in slow-cooked dishes across the Middle East. We wonder when this product is going to be used in our dishes! The black lime is made through boiling fresh limes in salt water and then layed in the sun. Which means that we can’t make them in the Netherlands. 😉
Fermented French Fries
Okay, we have to admit, we never heard of fermented French Fries before. Although lots of Dutch chefs are experimenting with fermenting at the moment. Google fermented French fries and you will get a lot of hits! We wonder when a Dutch restaurant is going to sell them, we love to taste them!
