Otomat serves ‘Heavenly pizza & glorious beer’ according to their website. It is a chain of pizza restaurants with branches in Antwerp (MAS), Ghent (with a view of ‘the Leie’ and a ‘Paddle in’), Bruges, Leuven and Mechelen. Otomat says it has reinvented the pizza experience and given it a unique Belgian twist. They create pizza with Flemish classics, the pizza bases have a local touch and, of course, the ‘beer pairings’! They have a special menu this summer and in addition they ask “to Otomat or Notomat?” upon entering. Curious?

Summer menu at Otomat

Otomat has reinvented the pizza experience and given it a uniquely Belgian twist. The pizza bases are made with the same brewer’s yeast used to brew Duvel beer and are given three days to rise. This results in an extremely thin and crispy base that forms the basis for their special pizzas. The toppings are of the highest quality and are combined with surprising beer pairings, creating a whole new pizza experience. Check out their menu here!

The summer pizzas you can find on the menu from this week onwards

Zorba The Freak: Coeur de boeuf tomatoes, aubergine, feta, sour cream, red peppers and mint. (Like your pizza with meat? Order an add-on merguez mince). Beer tip: Duvel

Kaiser Chicks: Grilled chicken, anchovies, romaine lettuce with Caesar dressing and Grana Padano flakes. Beer tip: Chouffe Lite

Las Vega (vegan):  Spicy curry legumaise, young leaf spinach, mushrooms, coconut flakes, garlic and soy yoghurt espuma. Beer tip: Vedett IPA (on draught)

“to Otomat or Notomat?”

At Otomat, visitors are immediately asked the question: “to Otomat or Notomat?” This means choosing between a pizza with tomato sauce (“au tomate”) or a version with sour cream or vegetable spread (“no tomate”). For those who cannot choose, sharing different pizzas with tablemates! This is where the name Otomat originates from.

Iconic and plant-based pizzas

Otomat is known for its heavenly pizzas, which offer unusual combinations not found anywhere else. They combine the very best (Belgian) produce, all with a touch of rock & roll. Otomat’s pizzas are made for sharing. They are sliced in advance so they can be easily picked up and shared, ideal for a fun time with a larger group. Reservations can be made for groups of eight people or more.

Otomat’s menu also includes two plant-based pizzas. This is not only to protect the planet, but also to show that pizza can be just as delicious without cheese and/or meat.

Stew on your pizza?

Those who have known Otomat for some time know that when they combine Flemish classics with pizza, the result is always surprising and tasty. Think of pizzas ‘vol-au-vent’, ‘tomate crevette’, ‘Gentse waterzooi’, ‘asparagus à la Flamande’,… preceded the stew pizza, with success. Even if they say so themselves.

We also just wrote an article about the Belgian chain, Hawaiian. We are curious if Otomat will also come to the Netherlands!
