For years, the iconic Nieuw Rotterdams Cafe (NRC popularly speaking) on the Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam, has always been the place where foodies, night owls, creatives and socialites gather for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and dancing. But after 12 years of loyal service, Rotterdam’s favourite café has decided it is time for renewal. The interior will get a major upgrade and there will be a whole new menu with worldly, sharable dishes. This new era will be festively ushered in with ‘The world of NRC’ and by a number of Rotterdam cultural icons on October 18th. There will be a new exhibition by artist Labrie and photographer Sud, there will also be a screening of a nature film by WFFR and DJ Ted Langebach will play the best tunes all night long.

New interior and culinary focus on street food and sharable dishes

NRC’s interior has been completely revamped, with warm red walls and heavy red curtains creating an intimate ambiance. This new ambiance perfectly matches the brand new menu, on which worldly sharable dishes dominate. Think recognisable dishes like the Old School Margherita and the NRC burger, but also think oysters, ceviche of sea bass with leche de tigre, pulpo a la gallega, and steak tartare with rib fingers in teriyaki sauce. ‘The dishes are inspired by flavours from around the world, with a focus on street food. Street food fits perfectly with NRC’s informal and lively atmosphere. It is accessible, surprising and made to be enjoyed together, just like our guests are used to here,’ chef Damian Elvers says of the new menu.

A festive opening of ‘The world of NRC’

During the festive opening on October 18th, the new Culture Wall will be unveiled, this time with a contribution from the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam. They will present the impressive film Lions of the Skeleton Coast, the screening of which starts at 4 pm. For only €5, visitors can buy a ticket for this exciting screening, which will be introduced by Laura Smit. The party erupts at 9pm, when ‘The world of NRC’ will be kicked off. DJ Ted Langebach and Bootsy Paul will spin the tastiest tunes, so visitors will dance the night away – just as you would expect from NRC.

Labrie x Sud

Art and culture have always been important pillars in ‘The world of NRC’. That is why the artworks on the famous Culture Wall are changed regularly. This is the place in the restaurant where exhibitions and art are prominently displayed. The other walls of the café are also available for art, making NRC function as a kind of mini gallery right in the heart of Rotterdam. Especially for the opening, Rotterdam artist Labrie bodypainted a series of women with graffiti and Rotterdam NRC slogans, typical of the artist’s signature style. Photos of these artworks were captured by photographer Sud and will be unveiled by the women themselves on October 18th. From October 19th on, the exhibition will be open to the general public.

We wrote about the NRC (NEW Rotterdam Café) before, for example about the introduction of their  Vir-Gin during the Dutch ‘Week of the alcohol free drink’.
