A new location for citizenM, they opened in one of the most up-and-coming business areas of Shanghai: Hongqiao, in the Minhang District. Concrete designed the interior of the freshly built 303-room citizenM hotel. It’s the brand’s second location in Asia (after Taipei North Gate). It is also a second collaboration between citizenM, Shun Tak, China Resources with the creative direction by Concrete.

The hotel entrance of citizenM on the ground floor with a spectacular floating dragon lantern by Thai artist Supachai T provides the first amazing photo opportunity, and acknowledges this important symbol of power and fortune in Chinese culture. From here, the guests have a beautiful sweeping view of the living room, collectionM (a one-of-a-kind retail shop), canteenM (the 24/7 food and drink kitchen), and a spiral staircase leading to the meeting rooms on the first floor.
The striking living rooms for relaxing or working. Specially selected art pieces add colour and energy to the whole space, while also giving an international platform to Chinese artists such as Mojo Wang, Bu Hua, Y0un9bug, QianJiu, Ke XiaoQin, and ChenChen.
Food and drinks (most locally sourced) are served at canteenM all day and night, ideal for midnight snack attacks, and for busy guests who don’t have time to dine out. A koi carpet, an art wall just behind, and plenty of daylight from two adjacent outdoor courtyards (with tree benches and dangling lanterns) create a joyful and energizing ambience. A second entrance leads the guests to the living room via a fun outdoor terrace with ping-pong tables, a swinging bench, and comfortable seats. An art wall (ideal for selfies) links the outside and the inside.
citizenM Shanghai Hongqiao is the 15th hotel in a noteworthy line-up of locations in nine of the world’s major business and leisure destinations, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, and New York. Further Asian developments are in the works, with a brand new location in Kuala Lumpur next on the opening list.
