At restaurant Rooster Soup Company in Philadelphia they help people in need by donating their profit to charity. Chef Michael Solomonov and his four partners at Federal Donuts made this possible via a crowdfunding campaign.

The Rooster Soup Company

The profit made at the Rooster Soup Company doesn’t go into the pockets of the owners but goes to charity instead, a charity that supports the homeless and poor people in Philidelphia. A part of the dishes they serve are made from chicken byproducts which otherwise would have been thrown away at restaurant chain Federal Donuts. For investors and guests it’s interesting to know that when they’re buying a meal, they make someone else happy with a meal.

Supporting social goals in a restaurant

We see this more often, restaurants that are operating socially responsible by supporting initiatives that for example improve the environment, provide jobs for people with a distance from the labor market and restaurants that are trying to reduce food waste. Supporting social goals can lead to consumer confidence and loyalty.

Concepts in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands there’re some restaurants who are working towards waste reduction. The Instock restaurants are turning food surplus into delicious meals, at Kromkommer they save wonky fruits and vegetables and bring them back to the consumer with their own product line and at Get Chef’s they prevent waste by selling restaurant leftover food to consumers.
