First edition of the Gin & Rum Festival at seven different locations throughout the Netherlands. Unlimited tasting of more than 100 different gin and rum brands. From the Piña Colada to the now indispensable Gin & Tonic. At the first edition of the Gin & Rum Festival everything revolves around these two distillates. Seven Dutch cities are taking part in the new festival this year and each location will be transformed into a true gin & rum paradise. Upon arrival, gourmets receive a full-fledged tasting glass with which they can taste more than 100 different types of gin and rum unlimited at the stands of well-known and emerging new brands. In addition to these tastings, visitors gain knowledge during substantive workshops, make their own cocktails and dance on fine tunes in the silent disco. Smell, taste and enjoy while being inspired by the stories of passionate distillers and bartenders.

In June, the very first covered ‘jeu de boules’ bar in Rotterdam North opens its doors: ‘Mooie Boules’ (Beautiful Boules). The old, characteristic metal factory in the upcoming ZOHO quarter in Rotterdam will be transformed into a French village square. Local restaurants (the names of which are not yet disclosed), will serve their signature dishes and at the bar a wide range of wine, specialty and local beers will be available. All this in combination with a game of ‘jeu de boules’. The location in Rotterdam opens on Vijverhofstraat 45 in Rotterdam-North in June. It seems like the Dutch love to play the famous French game!

Starbucks | Paper cup recycling launched in the Netherlands

Following a similar cup collection and recycling process proving successful in UK Starbucks stores, Starbucks now offers paper cup recycling in 11 of its company-operated stores in Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. Reinforces commitment to advancing Starbucks sustainability commitments in the Netherlands and driving industry-wide awareness and participation of cup recycling. The cup recycling will first trial in 11 company-operated Starbucks stores in the Netherlands, with plans to expand to more Starbucks stores across the country, operated by licensed business partners. In our ‘Trends we spotted in week 18’ we already wrote that Starbucks USA announced a partnership with Closed Loop Partners and its Center for the Circular Economy to develop the ‘NextGen Cup’, a recyclable and compostable cup.

More and more restaurants and wine bars open with the focus on a ‘relaxed atmosphere’. No culinary delights but great products and a nice glass of wine. Recently the wine café Alex + Pinard has opened in Amsterdam. The idea for the wine bar came from chef Nathaniel Zuijderwijk and sommelier Sanna Burggraaf, they were looking for a place to relax and drink a good glass of wine with quality, tasty food but couldn’t find. Thus they decided to join forces and create such a place in Amsterdam East. In this article, likewise concepts in New York, Amsterdam and The Hague.
