At Horecatrends we spot a lot of national and international trends on a daily basis. We pick the most interesting ones to write articles about, the smaller trends we use in our column ‘Trends we spotted this week’. This week amongst others a champagne vending machine in Las Vegas and in Japan opened a pop-up mayonnaise restaurant. Starbucks has announced their plans for an European Starbucks Roastery in Milan.

Restaurant Sukade | Design elements in the Smaeckpakhuys in Meppel

In the monumental Dutch storehouse Smaeckpakhuys at the Stoombootkade in the Dutch town Meppel recently opened restaurant Sukade (candied peel). A contemporary and affordable restaurant with a striking interior where the chef performs at a high level. He uses a lot of vegetables and his meat and fish being processed from head to tail. Restaurant Sukade combines a (coffee) bar, bistro and restaurant where guests can visit from 10am. A restaurant with a unique and contemporary interior with an open kitchen, designed by the chef. But also eye-catchers like the wallpaper with the candied peel fruit and two bars with azure green tiles, from one of the bars they serve delicious cakes. Also striking are the mustard green couches and the dark green and blue seat covers.

You can already guess what will be included in the dish, but it’s still funny to talk with your table companions what each emoji will represent. Holland’s majestic Parc Broekhuizen opens its doors to a series of unique culinary events, starting off this week. From this Friday till the 13th of March ‘Dinner at the Parc’ is organized. Ten Michelin starred chefs from all over the world will cook together with chef Marco Westmaas on the property of Parc Broekhuizen.

Recently the first IMAX VR Centre opened in Los Angeles where visitors have the opportunity to experience the world of virtual reality in 14 futuristic rooms. A comparable gaming hall opened last year in Taiwan. At Viveland Taiwan visitors can enjoy different Virtual Reality (VR) games at over 330 square meters. Are these VR Centres going to become the arcade halls of the future?

This week, the first edition of the Amsterdam Cocktail Week started and a ‘must see’ is the Tunes Bar at the Conservatorium Hotel. Last week they launched Tunes Around The World, a tantalizing trip around the world in eleven exciting cocktail & foodpairings. The plans from Bar Manager Tim Hoevenagel and Chef Schilo van Coevorden are ambitious: Tunes should be a destination bar for all cocktails.

Scottish craft brewery BrewDog is giving beer geeks an ultimate beer-themed immersive experience, with plans to build a craft beer hotel. The DogHouse hotel is expected to open in 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. Every element of your stay will pay homage to hops and the vast world of incredible craft beer. Brewdog is currently raising money for The Doghouse hotel through Indiegogo.

Dubai launches a self-flying drone taxi service

In Dubai, from this summer onwards it’s possible to experience a self-flying taxi. Passengers can select a destination and the ‘Ehang184’ drone will transport you to this destination. This new type of transportation should reduce the number of accidents on roads and move passengers faster from destination A to B.

Coca-Cola has recently introduced Ginger Coca-Cola in Japan and they will be rolling out Coca-Cola Plus this March. Coca-Cola Plus has no calories or sugar and it has extra fibers. They have added five grams of dextrin, a natural soluble fiber that has to help the body’s ability to remove waste and make it feel more satiated.

Usagi no Nedoko Kyoto | Serves food that looks like rocks and minerals

Usagi no Nedoko a shop, small inn and café in Kyoto is a highly unique concept that is inspired by nature. Artist Koichi Yoshimura developed a way to preserve plants in acrylic cubes, which he calls ‘Sola Cubes’. Mochi ice cream | Now available at the Whole Foods Markets

For all sweet cravers amongst us, these eye-catching brightly coloured mochi ice creams might be something for you. Mochi ice cream is a popular Japanese-American dessert made by covering bite-sized balls of ice cream with a sweet Japanese sticky rice dough. Last month the Whole Foods Markets introduced mochi ice cream bars in half of the American stores, and there are plans to open at more locations in the future.
