Some Christmas inspiration | Serve a cocktail in a Christmas ornament

Last month we wrote about the Christmas ornaments from The Lakes Distillery. They give the Christmas tree an alcoholic touch with Whiskey Christmas ornaments, or Christmas ornaments filled with The Lakes Vodka or The Lakes Gin. We already suggested that it is quite a nice idea to serve a cocktail in a Christmas ornament. Last weekend I had my first ‘Christmas dinner’ with friends and based on the Christmas ornaments from The Lakes Distillery, I also filled a small Christmas ornament with a Christmas cocktail, wrapped it in a gift box and served with the starter. Simple and tasty!
Inspiration around the Christmas tree | The Claridge’s Christmas Tree by Karl Lagerfeld

Claridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel has unveiled the Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2017 in the hotel lobby, designed by Karl Lagerfeld, widely regarded as one of the fashion world’s most influential creative forces. This year’s Claridge’s festive installation is inspired by Lagerfeld’s childhood memories of Christmas with a series of inverted spruce Christmas Trees placed around the hotel lobby. The centrepiece is a sixteen foot high inverted tree with silver gilded roots topped with a multi-facetted mirrored star which reflects rays of magical light across the art deco lobby. Fazer Cricket Bread | Finnish bakery launches ‘crunchy’ insect bread

Since the 24th of November you can buy cricket bread in Finland. One of Finland’s largest food companies, Fazer is selling this crunchy cricket bread. According to Markus Hellstrom, head of the Fazer group’s bakery division, one loaf of bread contains about 70 dried crickets. The crickets are grounded into powder and added to the flour.

This December, Bubbledogs, the gourmet hotdog and champagne bar, will be getting in the Christmas spirit, bringing back Londoners’ favourite: The Santa’s Sausage. Topped with all the festive favourites, Sandia Chang has been busy in the kitchen, designing the very special turkey hot dog with Christmas stuffing, cranberry chutney, crispy brussels sprouts, parsnip chips and gravy. This year, guests can also choose to pimp up their Santa’s sausage with the luxury addition of truffles, for a little extra.

More and more restaurants and wine bars open with the focus on a ‘relaxed atmosphere’. No culinary delights but great products and a nice glass of wine. Recently the wine café Alex + Pinard has opened in Amsterdam. The idea for the wine bar came from chef Nathaniel Zuijderwijk and sommelier Sanna Burggraaf, they were looking for a place to relax and drink a good glass of wine with quality, tasty food but couldn’t find. Thus they decided to join forces and create such a place in Amsterdam East. In this article, likewise concepts in New York, Amsterdam and The Hague.
Disaronno Innovation Hunter | The pursuit of innovation in cocktails

Disaronno, The Mixing Stars, makes a step change and starts looking for innovation. The Disaronno project dedicated to bartenders evolves and becomes a journey into the most innovative trends in international mixology. Wouter Bosch (Rosalia’s Menagerie in Amsterdam) is focussing on sustainability and Kevin Kroon (Door 74 in Amsterdam) shows attractive low ABV (alcohol by volume) cocktails. Tess Posthumus, Mixing Star in 2013, does introduce them in two interesting video’s. Their pursuit of innovation started in Milan and after Amsterdam they’re going to London. Speakeasy and storytelling | Foxglove and Mrs. Pound

The team behind the Ming Fat House of Jonathan Bui has created a speakeasy whisky bar in the business district of Hong Kong. They used local architect Nelson Chow Chi-Wai, to create the bar based on the story of a wealthy English adventurer, Frank Minza, who is the illegitimate son of an entrepreneur from Hong Kong’s Colonial days. He travelled the world in search of adventure and all things beautiful. However, what he never captured was the heart of his beloved, so he created Foxglove, named after his lost lover’s favourite flower, to win her back. That’s the storytelling around the speakeasy Foxglove in Hong Kong. It’s the second speakeasy of Ming Fat house in Hong Kong, the first is Mrs. Pound, a restaurant hidden behind a Chinese stamp shop! The story behind Mrs. Pound; she was a burlesque dancer who fell in love with a Chinese stamp shop owner.
Wihayo | The spirit of Korea with a Dutch spin

Wihayo, the traditional Korean receipt made with Dutch craftsmanship, is now available in the Netherlands. The premium distilled Soju is made from rice and contains a soft malty flavor. Wihayo is best to drink pure, but combines well in cocktails. The Wihayo produced in the Netherlands brings the best of two countries together: the age-old receipt from Korea and the Dutch expertise of distilling. The ingredients, a combination of fermented rice, grain, barley and natural sugars is tilled with a Dutch mill from 1785. Wihayo contains 19% alcohol.

Rebottled | From wine bottle to drinking glass

At Rebottled they believe that upcycling is the new recycling. They extend the lifespan of wine bottles by making drinking glasses at a workplace of the Salvation Army in Utrecht, The Netherlands. In addition, they employ people who do have difficulties trying to get a job, which improves the social environment of these people. With their idea they won the PwC Social Impact Lab and public award in October. They have also been nominated for the Horecava Innovation Award 2018.

AccorHotels counts among the first apps available in France on the Actions on Google platform, which lets brands create applications – known as “Actions” – for Google Assistant. Since October 26, it has therefore been possible to interact with Phil, the AccorHotels bot, using Google Assistant. A simple instruction – “Ok Google, I want to talk to AccorHotels” – and the conversation starts on smartphones (Android and iOS), the hands-free smart speaker Google Home or any compatible device.

Greenflash Wine introduces a new cocktail in the Netherlands: Barbera Tonic. This tough mix originates in the Italian region Piemont. The basis of the traditionally made Chinato is the Barbera d’Asti D.O.C.G. The Barbera Chinato is a delicious aperitif drink, but really surprising ‘in the mix’ with tonic or ‘G&T’.
