As of today, 23 October, Laren officially has a new hotspot: Gastrobar Anton opens in the same building as restaurant Mauve near the famous ‘Brink’ and can be visited for a coffee, a drink or snack. The GastroBar has a hip, Scandinavian design, with high tables, designer bar chairs, a large solid bar and a comfortable lounge area with leather sofas. Different types of wood, leather and fabric are used in the interior, together with it’s vintage touch this creates a warm atmosphere.

Gastrobar Anton

Where their neighbors, Mauve restaurant, is known for its lunch and dinner, Gastrobar Anton is a great place for a drink, a culinary lunch or shared dining until late in the evening. The dishes are adapted to the drink menu and they are matching with the various drinks. These combination are served by the chefs, for example:

  • Grilled beetroot, goat cheese mousse, sherry vinegar and tarragon, with a good glass of wine.
  • Steak tartare with puffed quinoa and mustard foam, with a cocktail.
  • Panna cotta of white chocolate with caramelized pineapple, with a cup of coffee.

In the weekends guests can stay even longer, every Friday and Saturday a DJ is playing music.

The first CUP espressobar opened with help of crowdfunding

16-10-2014

After a successful crowdfunding campaign the first CUP (Coffee Unites People) espresso bar opened in Voorburg on 18 October. The espresso bar is an addition to mobile capuccinobar, MobiCcino, which has been active since 2004. Guido Dam, owner of the MobiCcino and Mario van Andel, passionate barista and manager of the first CUP, noticed that there is an increased demand for quality tea and coffee and a set location to get it. The CUP espresso bar is a place in the neigborhood where you meet with neighbors, friends and business associates, or where you treat yourself with a delicious coffee. You can also buy fresh ground coffee beans.

Why crowdfunding?

The gentlemen have chosen crowdfunding as a way to obtain money because this caused a direct involvement of investors in the neighborhood. For example: the local barber and real estate agent have to opportunity to invest in the neighborhood straight away. In total, an amount of € 50,000,- was collected.

We already wrote about the CoffeeQube of MobiCcino before.

Having crow for dinner

This year, restaurant MOES in Amsterdam and the ‘Keuken van het Ongewenste Dier’ (Kitchen of Unwanted Animals) organize the fourth edition of the unwanted animals dinner on 5 October. As we wrote last year in the article about the Christmas edition, the dinner of unwanted animals is dedicated to animals that are undesired for whatever reason. Examples are gooses, muskrats, crayfishes and the swans. As always, Rob Hagenouw and Nicolle Schatborn (of ‘Keuken van Ongewenste Dieren’) give explanations of why these animals should be eaten. One of the animals that will be on this year’s menu is crow. It is a four course diner, including appetizer, welcome drink and tea/coffee for € 39,50. Reservations can be made via the website of restaurant MOES.

Selfies are here to stay!

16-9-2014

Restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions can use the trends #selfies.

The Braggy

Regardless of your opinion, too narcissistic, often poor quality, you aren’t fond of those flashes of the phones of those young people, the #Selfie is incredibly popular. Especially during this holiday season it struck me how many people make selfies at tourist spots, in well-known restaurants, on the beach, drinking a cocktail etcetera and posted it on their social media channels. In America they already came up with a new term, ‘The #Braggy’, from to brag.

The Gordon Street Garage in West Perth is located in a former garage. The restaurant is based on the idea of simple and local produce. The coffee is for example roasted and ground on location which allows the garage to daily serve different types of coffee. The dishes on the menu are yard-to-table inspired and mostly designed to share. The restaurant has an industrial-chic interior which shows the origin of the building. A lot of furniture and fittings are even made from the wood and steel of the original garage itself. The large space of the Gordon Street Garage is divided into different zones to create a wide range of dining experiences. A part of the space is arranged for a quick cup of coffee, the large bar and high tables are created for a cocktail and a bar snack and another part of the area is used for extensive lunches or dinners. The building of restaurant Oxwell & Co in China-Town, Singapore, has a rich and divers history which can be seen in the different rooms of the restaurant. The ground floor has a pub vibe which is perfect for a cup of coffee or a house distilled gin & tonic. The first floor has a more homely feeling and is more suited for a dinner. Their chef Mark Sargeant prepares his classics such as crisp tomato salads with goat cheese or slabs of aged Porterhouse steak and beer-battered onion rings.

Although both the ground and first floor look really nice, the absolute highlight of Oxwell & Co is the second floor. The Lord Oxwell private study, which serves as private dining room and smoking area, really impressed us. The room is not only filled with dark mahogany accents but is covered with taxidermied squirrels and paintings of animals in Victorian dresses. Take a look at the pictures, and you will see what makes this room so special.
