At horecatrends.com or hospitalitytrends.eu we spot many national and international trends on a daily basis. We pick the most interesting ones to write about, the other trends we use in our weekly column ‘Trends we spotted this week’.

With this week some news from France; the Louvre Hotels Group is working together with Decathlon and the coaching application Trainme to transform a classic hotel room into a private gym. And the Logis Hotels Group is again partner of the 108th edition of the Tour de France.

Spotted in London; 11 outdoor cinemas popping up this summer! As both restaurants and cinemas have had a tough year, it might be a great idea to work together! Spotted in Paris, 60 restaurants and Deliveroo offer the reusable containers by barePack to create zero waste delivery.

Another Spritz Bar in combination with a Pizza Parlour; Piazza by the Pier in London. Will the Spritz Bars al fresco be the hit of this summer? And Lay’s chips opened a non-existent restaurant to introduce Amsterdammers to a menu consisting of three iconic Lay’s flavoured chips with names like the fast food giants KFC, Subway and Pizza Hut.

A Pop-Up Bike Experience of WeWatt X Ovamo was held in Antwerp on the Grote Markt. It might be a great idea as a bar or coffee bar to place a few WeWatt cycling tables to encourage exercise? And Vapiano’s Germany will go #Pinsa. They will gradually eliminate the classic pizza from its menu. The dough of the Pinsa is fluffier than the conventional pizza dough and also more digestible.

At hospitalitytrends.eu we spot many national and international trends on a daily basis. We pick the most interesting ones to write about, the smaller trends we use in our weekly column ‘Trends we spotted this week’.

This week, amongst others a link to an article about a special collaboration between the restaurant of the Andaz Amsterdam and Heinz ketchup, a menu called ‘In case Ed Sheeran’.  And have you got any idea what the ingredients are for a dish called ‘Musubi Madness’?

We also read an article about a dumpling made with lab-grown kangaroo meat and another ‘veggie’ collaboration; Beyond Meat and Subway introduced the Beyond Meatball Marinara Sub this September.

The Gateway Foundation says it will open its first space hotel in 2025, check out their artist impression of the ‘Space Wheel’ hotel. And the new Raaago app, developed by German design group Random Access Studios, aims to make travel more interesting by making it random.

And Starbucks is rolling out the Chinese ‘Starbucks Now’-concept. The first pick-up-only shop will open in New York City this fall.

Five-time FIA Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton is collaborating with hospitality organisation ‘The Cream Group’ and investors including UNICEF Ambassador and early backer of Beyond Meat, Tommaso Chiabra, to revolutionize fast food when they launched the new concept Neat Burger, a plant-based sustainable burger chain. They opened their first site on September 2nd just off Regent Street in London.  Neat Burger promises to transform the way people see plant-based food by appealing to not only those who follow plant-based diets, but any individuals, meat-eaters included, who want to eat delicious meat-free dishes that are more sustainable, healthier and ethical. The team has ambitious plans to expand the concept globally with 14 franchises planned in the next 24 months.

We have been spotting a lot initiatives which include the burgers or other products by Beyond Meat. Burger King recently tested Beyond Fried Chicken™ which was sold out in no time and this September Subway will introduce the Beyond Meatball Marinara sub in 685 participating restaurants in Canada and the U.S. for a limited time only. As far as we know Neat Burger will be the first plant-based sustainable burger chain serving unique patties, specially created by their team of chefs in collaboration with Beyond Meat.

Fujita Kanko Opens Halal Japanese restaurant Origami Asakusa in Tokyo

Leading Japanese hospitality company Fujita Kanko Inc. announced that it will open Halal Japanese restaurant Origami on July 25th in Asakusa, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tokyo. The company intends to attract the increasing Muslim visitors in Japan. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the number of Muslim visitors to Japan has been rising significantly in recent years. The growth is especially apparent with Malaysian visitors as well as Indonesian visitors, which grew 30% from 2016 to 2017. In a survey conducted before arriving in Japan, a majority of Muslim visitors expressed a keen interest in trying Japanese foods in Japan. Yet Japanese restaurants that cater to halal populations are still extremely limited. read more

Early May the second Bilder & De Clercq Wall has been placed in the most sustainable building in the world: The Edge on the Zuidas (South of Amsterdam). The new prestigious headquarters of Deloitte/AKD designed by PLP / Architecture.
This allows the employees of these offices to order their groceries at Bilder & De Clercq every workday, without leaving the office. Same day delivery without subscription! To use the Bilder & De Clercq Wall, one must download the Bilder & De Clercq app and enter payment details. We have previously written about the first Bilder & De Clercq Wall in Google’s office in Amsterdam.

The future of grocery shopping?

We would love a wall like the Bilder & De Clercq Wall at our office! No more worries about what to eat, no overwhelming choices. Just order it until 15:30 and pick up the groceries from 17:00 hours. No more shopping stress during weekdays! The wall offers 14 dishes, plus some drinks and small bites.
After registration you order the dishes either by tapping into the app, or by keeping the smartphone in front of the dish of your choice. The wireless NFC chip in the phone takes care of the communication. We know a similar concept from South Korea where supermarket chain Tesco has developed a virtual shop at a subway station. Yes.Tap makes contactless payments possible.

With their store Rogier Leopold and Diederik Van Gelder facilitate people who want to cook tasty and healthy but just don’t want to dub about the menu. With a weekly changing menu, Bilder & De Clercq offers choice of fourteen dishes for which they provide the ingredients in the right amount. They have a shop in Amsterdam (on the corner of the Bilderdijkstraat and the De Clercqstraat) and already two Bilder & De Clercq Walls. The icons of McDonald’s: continuing the ‘No Logo’ strategy

One of our readers e-mailed us a picture of an advertisement with a simple icon, seen in a bus shelter. He suspected that the icon was an advertisement of Mcdonald’s? And he was right. McDonald’s in the Netherlands lets these icons speak for themselves without adding any text.

The ‘No Logo’ strategy

In 2014 McDonald’s USA started the champagne ‘No Logo’. This campaign shows that the products of McDonald’s became brands. Above you can see the first original TV-commercial that was made for this campaign. It was directed by agency TBWA Paris. Now McDonald’s in the Netherlands goes an extra mile by changing its products into just Picto’s. This way they show the Dutch audience that even if their products are advertised as Picto’s, they still are recognizable.

Picto Puzzles based on the Beacon-technology

Besides the pictures you can find on billboards, advertisements in bus shelters and on posters, you can find them as well at more famous places, like the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam and the subway station ‘Beurs’ in Rotterdam. By scanning these Picto Puzzles with the McDonald’s app, you receive a notification to play Picto Puzzle. Mcdonald’s is the first advertiser in the Netherlands who inserts the Beacon-technology.

Bilder & De Clercq introduces interactive wall

From 9 September the Bilder & De Clercq grocery store from Amsterdam introduced an interactive wall at the Google Office in Amsterdam. The grocery store weekly offers fourteen tasty, healthy and easy to prepare dishes with all the necessary ingredients in the right amount. YES.TAP makes it even more easy for consumers to order a meal: they only need their smartphone to touch a dish on a screen. The interactive wall was introduced as a response to the trend of online groceries ordering. Customers can order the fourteen dishes and other products via the Bilder & De Clercq Wall and via the app at home. If the order is send before 4 o’clock pm the cooled groceries can be picked up from 5 o’clock pm

More interactive walls? In 2011 we’ve already spotted  a virtual wall from supermarket chain Tesco in a subway station in South Korea.
