With the Academy Program there is a special focus on bar personnel during the Amsterdam Bar Week this year. At the Double Tree by Hilton Skylounge are various seminars and taste sessions about bitters (John Fee), cognac (Mark Ridgwell) and world class cocktail makers.
In the summer of 2013, Boxpark NDSM will open its doors on the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. This is a pop-up shopping mall, consisting of containers, a variant of the London Boxpark Shoreditch. The containers will feature mostly fashion stores, but as well eateries, theatre and a cinema. The stores will be opened only during the weekend, but probably non-stop for 48 hours.
The canals of Amsterdam host a swimming match on Sunday 9 September. The event is organized by the Amsterdam City Swim foundation and Waternet, the benefits go to a research fund for the ALS disease (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The route starts at the ‘Marine Etablissement’, goes past the ‘Scheepvaart museum’ to the Amstel, Herengracht and finishes in the Keizersgracht. It’s also possible to swim the distance in a 4×500 meter relay with a business team.
Ever wondered how a bowling alley works? At Powerzone Lovers Bowling in Amsterdam it’s all visible from the street. The walls are transparent so the white lanes, UV-lights and colourfull LED lights spread a futuristic glow to its surroundings. There is a laser-game area as well.
On the 5th of September ‘Van Rijn Kitchen en Bar’ opens officially, but it’s possible to have a sneak peek already. The dine & dance concept at the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam has a 7,5 meters high ceiling with a self portrait of Rembrandt van Rijn in a mosaic of acoustic tiles. The open kitchen serves ‘Dutch cuisine fushion with a twist’, Jazzy D will host the jazz-oriented music nights.

The Vegetarian Society (The Netherlands) orginazes ‘The Longest Vegetarian Table’ on Wednesday 11 July. The event is organized at the Museumsquare in Amsterdam, and they strive to feed at least 600 and up to 800 people at once at a long table of 220 meters. The meal is offered for free, but the organization is still looking for sponsors. For singles who want to meet other singles, there are special places at the ‘Vega Dates’ tables. From May 31 till June 6 you can enjoy culinary delights at the Amstelpark in Amsterdam. Twelve of the best restaurants in Amsterdam will pamper your taste buds with their food; Blauw, Bolenius, Bridges, De Kersentuin, Fifteen, Lute, Momo, Sucre, The Butcher, The Harbour Club, Sushi time and Toscanini.
Designer Liz Müller designed together with a team of local artists the new Starbucks in Amsterdam. The Starbucks is furnished with oak furniture, antique Delfts tiles and the wall consists of recycled inner tubes of old bicycle tires. The ceiling consists of over 1800 carved blocks. Starbucks will be opened this Friday in Amsterdam.
The Pop-up Wine Bar will be opening her doors in Amsterdam from 17 November until 23 December. You can taste 41 different wines by the glass and even per sip. The price per glass will vary from € 3,50 to € 350,= and a small menu will be offered such as several types of cheese, delicacies and sushi to accompany the wines. The Pop-up Wine Bar provides with a living room, a bedroom, a large kitchen table, a tv-corner and a bubblebad. Moreover it is allowed to smoke inside, to enjoy a sigaret in bed to create the perfect home-away-from-home feeling.
