A list of examples of sustainable initiatives in the fast food industry. From details like sustainable ketchup from The Ketchup Project to fast-food chains that have built their identity around sustainability like HoneyBee Burger and the German chain ‘Hans im Gluck’. Here in the Netherlands we have small sustainable concepts like Pomms’ Rotterdam and the chain Vegan Junk Food Bar. These sustainable initiatives range from putting new sustainable tech in place to climate-neutral burgers and fast-food brands that solely serve vegetarian & vegan food.

With #VeganJanuary, #TryJanuary and the importance of sustainability for our future, a list of concepts worth to try! And as you will read, many of these initiatives have been reported on our website for years. We don’t really get why large companies like The Crown, The Clown and The Colonel have not played a larger part in this development.

A summer’s day at the beach is the perfect time for a tasty picnic, a romantic sunset dinner or an extensive drink with a bottle of ice-cold rosé. But eating on the beach often ends up in getting a small fries or something else unhealthy. A problem that the Foodhall Scheveningen, located on the new Noord Boulevard, is only too happy to tackle. To be able to serve guests on the beach, they came up with an ordering system for the beach. “On the beach you want to eat fast, easy but also healthy and tasty food. Thanks to our new ordering system, visitors can order their favourite dishes at the proverbial touch of a button and collect them without waiting. We make sure that everything is packed in a beach-proof way. You get a notification on your phone when you can pick up your order. Ideal for those wonderful, endless summer days on the beach”, according to the entrepreneurs of the Foodhall Scheveningen.

DOEN Participaties and Brave New Food Investments (BNFI) are jointly investing 450,000 euros in The Ketchup Project, a sustainable initiative that combats food waste and empowers local Kenyan farmers. With this investment, The Ketchup Project can hire extra staff and invest in the purchase of its own drying hubs.

Sustainable ketchup for restaurants and fast food restaurants, interesting for those companies that have sustainability high on their agenda.

In the Netherlands we cycle a lot and who is not familiar with the bike from which ice cream is sold? Or a coffee bike in a hiking area? But there are many more bicycles from which oysters, cocktails, fries, smoothies, cotton candy, cheese, churros and pizzas are sold. There are a number of professional food bike rental companies, but we also know a number of enthusiastic one-man businesses such as the ‘Oyster bike’ of Jolijn Géboers in Amsterdam and the ‘Cocktail bike’ of Niels den Boogert. With the summer approaching, a list of ‘food bikes’ and ‘food tricycles’! Maybe time for a small-scale food bike / food tricycles festival instead of a food truck festival? And then a joint work-out from the Bakfiets Gym afterwards!
