This ad from McDonald’s in a bus shelter in Sydney is only fully displayed when it is dark. During the day it seems like it lacks the half of the famous ‘M’ , but as soon as it gets dark the entire ‘M’ appears in the reflection of the glass. This ad is part of the new campaign by McDonald’s to announce that the fast food chain is open all night.

Increasingly we’re noticing more attention to gluten-free products. McDonald’s has recently joined the trend with a gluten-free bun. But we spotted a gluten-free pizza at Domino’s pizza in London in 2012. The gluten-free products provide a good example of transparency. Both companies ensure that the bun and pizza crust are gluten-free, but they also indicate that they are prepared in a kitchen where gluten are processed, which mean that traces of gluten can be found in the meal. McDonald’s has taken a fresh approach with their most recent advertising campaign called “Think With Your Mouth”. Created by New York-based ad agency Translation, the outcome is a series of 20-second videos, which all feature a Big Mac as the centerpiece. Each of the videos has a distinct style with the goal of appealing to a different segment of Internet users. With this tactic they aim to increase the number of people who are likely to click on any one of the company’s videos, thus increasing the effectiveness of the ad campaign.

Order the McCurrywurst in Germany

Today one of the famous fast food item ‘currywurst’ (curry sausage) will be introduced at McDonald’s Germany. After the German specialties Big Rosti and McBrezer, the ‘McCurrywurst’ will be sold in approximately 1.400 locations. The next six weeks visitors can order the ‘McCurrywurst’ in combination with a Kaiserroll or with fries in a menu. McDonald’s Germany hopes that the McCurrywurst will soon become the company’s next classic menu item.

TrackMyMacca for Aussies

McDonald’s in Australia, better known as Macca’s, introduced a new iPhone app. With the app ‘TrackMyMacca’s’ the guest can see where the ingredients originate from and what happens before they are served. Another example of transparency at McDonald’s. In Canada they’ve created a YouTube movie about the difference between the hamburger in an ad and in your own box. There is also a ‘behind the scenes‘ about the French fries.

LYFE organic fast-food

LYFE Kitchen is an organic fast-food alternative with great ambitions. The founders of LYFE, an acronym for ‘love your food everyday’, are former McDonald’s employees and want to open hundreds of restaurants in the next five years. McDonald’s former chief operating officer Mike Roberts and former chief of communications officer Mike Donahue opened a prototype restaurant on Hamilton Avenue in Palo Alto. They improve the cooking process and the logistics to save every second possible. When customers order they receive a coaster with a RFID tag. By this tag a runner can locate the table with the order. The restaurant offers organic brussel sprouts as alternative for french fries. Watch the video for about the kitchen of LYFE.

The Dutch most famous Burger

McDonald’s started a co-creation campaign in the Netherlands. Consumers can create their own burger on the website. Website visitors can vote for this burger, and the burger with the most votes will become the Dutch most famous Burger. This hamburger will be sold in all Dutch locations under the name of the winner. On September the 17th the winner will be announced, the winning burger is available from 18 September.

McDonald’s is testing a pilot where motorists can watch the menu, place an order and pay  through their naviagtion system in their cars. The order can be picked up at the nearest McDonald’s drive-in.
