No more ‘broiler chicken’ in grill restaurant Gauchos
Restaurant chain Gauchos has banned the ‘plofkip’ out of their twelve locations in the Netherlands. ‘Plofkip’ is the term we use in the Netherlands for a broiler chicken. Since last week you will only get chicken who are having a ‘Better Life quality’ mark. ‘Wakker Dier’ to be translated as ‘Awake Animals’ is a Dutch animal welfare organisation. They started a campaign in order to get as many restaurants as possible ‘broiler chicken free’.
Restaurants are still behind on supermarkets
Despite the fact that you won’t get any broiler chicken anymore in many supermarkets, restaurants are still behind. At least, many consumers are not aware of what kind of chicken they eat in restaurants. In comparison with supermarkets you won’t find any specific information about the chicken on the menu card of the restaurant. Anne Hillhorst working at the ‘Wakker Dier’ organisation said the following on Dutch radio: “The restaurants who mention the type of chicken they serve on the menu, will only do so if they serve chicken with a ‘better life’ mark. There is no restaurant bragging about the fact that they serve broiler chicken. If it is not clear on the menu, ask the waiter”.
Wakker Dier campaign against the broiler chicken
Wakker Dier will be campaigning in the Netherlands through radio commercials and (social) media. During the campaign they will ask consumers to be critical towards restaurants when ordering chicken. Everyone can help to make as many restaurants as possible ‘broiler chicken free’ during the upcoming weeks.
