Opening – Café Cress is a new culinary addition to Amsterdam-Noord. Behind this concept are Jeffrey Klepper, Niamh Groentjes and Cyril Martineau. Klepper runs the front and Groentjes and Martineau are responsible for the kitchen. With Café Cress, the three want to create an approachable place where everyone feels at home. Like sitting with family or friends in your living room, but with good service and food at an affordable price. Cress maintains a small menu that changes every week with fresh products from the market. You can go to Cress for lunch, drinks and dinner.

Weekly changing menu at Café Cress

The menu changes weekly, making the menu surprising every time. Martineau scours the famous market in Amsterdam, the Albert Cuyp, in the morning and the ingredients he finds are inspiration for the menu. Team Cress tries to make everything themself, from vinegar to pastries and from ice cream to kimchi. Even the sausages are homemade. And what cannot be made in-house is bought from local suppliers such as Fromagerie Kef, city baker AS and Zwarts’ Coffee. Co-owner Groentjes: “Cyril brings his French cooking style to the kitchen and I was raised mostly with Asian cuisine and I have travelled a lot. Together, we often come up with a menu where you have a little bit of everything.”

Homely ambiance

At Café Cress, everyone is welcome. For instance, there are lots of games and colouring sheets for the youngest and the doors are painted with chalkboard paint so children can enjoy drawing on the doors. And a bowl of water is arranged for your four-legged friend. Add to this maître Klepper’s service and you have an instant homely feeling. Klepper is also responsible for the wine list with accessible wines on it, with a focus on countries close to the Netherlands, which can be ordered by the glass or bottle. For the enthusiast, there are also some exciting wines by the bottle on the menu. Whenever possible, Klepper sources the wine himself from the winemakers.

Spacious quayside terrace

In summer, you can enjoy the quayside terrace, which has sun all-day, thanks to its south-facing location. The idea is to create a mini food forest here with, for example, passion fruit bushes and edible plants such as peppers, blueberries and tomatoes. Currently, Green’s father is growing these plants at home after which all the greenery will be planted at Café Cress.
