Mokums Overdreven IJwit | Brewery ‘t IJ celebrates Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary
In honor of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, Brewery – Brouwerij ‘t IJ is launching a special variant of their iconic IJwit called: ‘Mokums Overdreven IJwit’. In love as the brewery is with its city, to which it has been connected for 40 years, it exaggerated considerably with Mokum’s favorite beer. “With 7.50% alcohol and extra additions of the ingredients that make IJwit so characteristic, this is a beer that has just a little too much of everything, because that’s what we love in Amsterdam.”
On Oct. 27, 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary and from October 2024 it will be celebrated with such events as an opening concert at the Ziggo Dome, The Great Amsterdam Quiz and Feest op de Ring A10.

Overdone beer for quirky Amsterdammers | Mokums Overdreven IJwit
A year-long celebration is underway throughout Amsterdam as the city celebrates its 750th anniversary. From every nook, canal and street, the festivities are popping up. A congratulations from Brouwerij ‘t IJ, the city’s premier brewery, in the form of a new beer is of course not to be missed. ‘Mokums Overdreven IJwit’ is a tribute to the people of Amsterdam themselves: quirky, a touch exaggerated and always packed with humor. The beer contains excessive amounts of all its ingredients, making it particularly full of flavor and with just a bit more spice. All in all, a particularly dangerous beer that you have to take a seat for. Both the beer and the bottle are a gift to Amsterdam and its people. “On the bottle you will find illustrations that capture typical Amsterdam icons and clichés,” says Louis Croonen, brand manager at Brouwerij ‘t IJ. “We live in a fantastic city, with everything we love and also with everything we want to bitch about from time to time. Preferably while enjoying an Amsterdam beer of course, and this ‘Mokums Overdreven IJwit’ is perfect for that.”
Brouwerij ‘t IJ | From hobby beer to an Amsterdam favourite
Brouwerij ‘t IJ may not be as old as the city itself, but with nearly 40 years it has left a solid mark on both Amsterdam and Dutch beer culture as a whole. The first quirky specialty beer was brewed by musician Kasper Peterson in a washtub in an Amsterdam squat house. Soon the brewery moved to a former bathhouse in Amsterdam East under the well-known windmill, where growth could continue. What began with a simple counter made of boards on crates has since become an iconic part of the city. With the IJwit as the undisputed favorite among Amsterdammers for years. “Nowadays the famous ‘IJ delivery guys’ bring the beer, but I used to just pick it up myself at the mill in Amsterdam East,” says Glen Swart, owner of café De Ooievaar: ”I never signed off on what I brought, it was a small brewery. Everything just went on trust. Nowadays Brouwerij ‘t IJ just belongs to Amsterdam, you can’t think them away from the city.”
