Memphis Meats | Meat of the future

28-8-2017

Memphis Meats is a start-up who wants to bring meat to the plate in a more sustainable, affordable and delicious way. The leading clean meat company has already produced beef, chicken and duck directly from animal cells, without the need to raise and slaughter animals. The company has now raised $22M to date, among the investors were Bill Gates and Richard Branson. Is this the future?

“The way conventional meat is produced today creates challenges for the environment, animal welfare and human health. With global consumers spending nearly $1 trillion per year on meat, and demand for meat expected to double in the coming decades, one thing is clear: we need a better way to feed a hungry world.”, as stated on the website of Memphis Meats.

The goal of the company is simple: to change the way meat gets to your plate. With this thought in mind, they developed a way to produce real meat from animal cells, without the need to feed, breed and slaughter actual animals. The animal cells are growing in tanks where oxygen, sugar and other nutrition’s are added. This makes it better for the environment (requiring up to 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, land and water than conventionally-produced meat), the animals and public health. The world’s first clean meatball and the world’s first clean poultry have already been launched by using this method.

Investors

Memphis Meats plans to use the $22M to continue developing delicious products, to accelerate its work in scaling up clean meat production, and to reduce production costs to levels comparable to – and ultimately below – conventional meat costs. The company expects to quadruple its headcount, and has already begun growing its team of chefs, scientists, creative people and business people.
