You’re probably not familiar with the name ‘Poké’. Or you might think of a Pokémon. But it’s actually a Hawaiian dish, which keeps increasing its popularity at the West Coast of America. This results in more and more Pokerias, bars where you can eat Poké. In Rotterdam recently opened a Poké Bowl restaurant.

Eat your Poké at a Pokerias

Poké pronounced as poke ay, is a Hawaiian dish that has gained popularity at the West Coast of the United States. More and more Pokerias pop up in this region but not only there, they also serve Poké at the Hawaiian restaurant Noreetuh in New York City. And in Rotterdam at Poké Bowl. Poké comes from the verb for “to section, slice, or cut” in the Hawaiian language.
When you order a Poké you will get a bowl of chopped or cubed raw fish (traditionally ahi tuna) over seaweed seasoned rice … the fish tossed in a composed marinade of soy sauce, macadamia nuts, green onion, seaweed, sesame oil and sesame seed.

Every chef will make his own version of it, but the basics remain the same. For the vegetarians they make it with avocado. The dish is also comparisable to the Peruvian Ceviche.

In the Netherlands restaurant Poké Bowl recently opened in Rotterdam. Kind of a Pokeria… We wonder whether the Europeans and the Dutch will fancy Poké as much as they do Sushi.
