On Thursday April 17, the first Dutch location of the ‘Better Burger’ chain, Hans im Glück, will open on the bustling Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. This full-service hospitality brand, which was founded in Munich in 2010, now has 83 restaurants in Germany, 10 in Switzerland and two in Austria. About three-quarters of Hans im Glück’s locations are run by franchisees and franchise opportunities are also coming up in the Netherlands. At this concept, guests can enjoy premium burgers and delicious food, special drinks and good company, all until after midnight.

Complete dining with a main focus on burgers
Hans im Glück offers guests a high-quality and complete dining, drinking and going out experience. The menu focuses on burgers and they are as diverse as the success chain’s intended audience: with meat, fish, veg and vegan, there is something for every taste. The drinks menu is at least as diverse. Besides beer and soft drinks, the concept offers a generous choice of non-alcoholic, house-made drinks and an exciting and extensive cocktail selection. So the bar is not just a drinks buffet for the restaurant, but an entertainment destination in its own right.
Hans im Glück refers to Grimm brothers’ fairy tale
The name Hans im Glück (‘Happy Hans’) refers to a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, in which Hans exchanges less and less valuable things and eventually becomes happier than ever without possessions. “And that is exactly the foundation of Hans im Glück’s success, says Country Director in the Netherlands, Hugo Kruijssen. ‘’Good company, a nice environment, excellent service, delicious food and drinks and that at a fair price – that’s all you need for a great night out”.
Subtle reference to the fairy tale in the interior
The interior of the historic building on the Rembrandtplein is a true statement of style and sustainability. It is a perfect mix of modern elements and natural materials, with lots of wood, birch trunks and subtle references to the fairy tale of Hans im Glück. Although the interior honours the restaurant’s name, it is not a fairy tale concept. Instead, it offers an inviting and warm ambience.
Making people happy and more sustainable every day
More than 3,500 employees work at Hans im Glück, offering around 25,000 guests a great experience every day. ‘Making people happy is what Hans im Glück is all about,’ explains Hugo Kruijssen. “That applies to both our guests and our employees. We like to say yes. Does a guest want eight toppings on his burger? Does an employee want to work flexible shifts? Does a franchisee want to open a second or third location? We always do our utmost to make that possible. This is how we create loyal customers as well as loyal employees and franchisees. We believe in lasting relationships.”
Sustainability also plays a major role in its operations. The company is increasingly introducing plant-based menu items, such as the popular bio-falafel burger, and collaborates with sustainable food-tech innovators such as Greenforce. These efforts were recently awarded with a ProVeg Award, a prestigious recognition for brands at the forefront of the plant-based revolution, for the third time in four years. Animal welfare organisation PETA named Hans im Glück as most vegan-friendly restaurant, a unique for not 100% vegan restaurant chain.
Franchise opportunities at Hans im Glück
The organisation offers entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing brand with ambitious expansion plans in the Netherlands. After opening its first location in Amsterdam, the brand intends to have a presence in multiple locations throughout the Netherlands within a short time. Franchise owners can benefit from a proven successful concept focusing on premium burgers, innovative cocktails and a top-quality guest experience. With strong brand recognition, extensive operational support and a focus on sustainability and customer satisfaction, Hans im Glück provides a solid foundation for success and growth in the Dutch hospitality industry.
