Maruki, an innovative concept that combines Japanese cuisine with halal principles, will soon open its doors as the very first fully halal Japanese restaurant in the Netherlands. Led by Xu Dong Sun, a driven hospitality entrepreneur with a profound passion for both the hospitality industry and his faith, Maruki promises to offer a unique and carefree culinary experience to Rotterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. For the first halal Japanese restaurant in the Netherlands, he has launched a unique crowdfunding campaign for funding. More than half of the €40,000 target amount has already been raised by 79 committed investors.

No more worries about halal at this halal Japanese restaurant

Xu Dong Sun’s roots lie in a hard-working Chinese entrepreneurial family in Rotterdam-Zuid. His extensive experience in the hospitality industry as well as taking a course at the Rajuku Ramen School in Tokyo led to the establishment of Maruki restaurant. With his commitment to his faith and his desire to make a difference in the community (ummah), he plans to create a place where Muslims and non-Muslims can enjoy halal Japanese cuisine, such as ramen and sushi, without having to worry about the halal status of their meal. ‘Our vision is to support the Muslim community in the Netherlands and make it possible to eat truly halal Japanese food. We believe that adhering to halal principles is not just about food and drink, but also a lifestyle that reinforces the Muslim’s faith,’ said entrepreneur Sun.

Islamic crowdfunding

Sun has chosen a way to raise his funding while sticking to his faith. ‘Given the Islamic nature of the concept and that it is a project for and by Muslims, the loan is interest-free. In fact, interest is not allowed in the Islam and is therefore not used for this reason,’ Sun said.

So the campaign for this halal Japanese restaurant revolves around a loan, but vouchers can also be purchased, to be redeemed later once the restaurant opens. Meanwhile, the campaign has already raised nearly €23,000. To realise all his plans, Sun wants to raise a total of €40,000. Watch Maruki’s crowdfunding campaign or the video below. The campaign will run until 1 March, or until the maximum target amount is reached.
