Coffee Free Coffee | A cup of hot coffee without the coffee beans

At the end of September 2022 the Dutch start-up Northern Wonder launched Coffee Free Coffee. The new product has the taste and smell of coffee, contains caffeine, and is even brewed the same way as regular coffee but does not contain any ingredients grown in a tropical environment. Northern Wonder has used patentable technology to successfully create a hot coffee product without coffee beans.

Back in 2019 we wrote about the startup Atomo from Seattle, they launched a similar product, molecular coffee made without coffee beans. They launched a cold brew in a can in August this year. This is made from date seeds, grape skin and chicory root and theine. Very different ingredients from those of Coffee Free Coffee. As colleagues, we discussed this product and we were very curious, fortunately we can now taste Coffee Free Coffee. Preventing deforestation by developing beanless coffee

Coffee cultivation ranks sixth on the WWF list of drivers of deforestation. Northern Wonder developed its bean-free coffee in response. Instead of coffee beans, Coffee Free Coffee is made from ingredients that include lupin beans, chickpeas, and blackcurrants. Four varieties will be available from the webstore: filter grounds and compostable Nespresso-compatible capsules, both available with or without caffeine.

Coffee Free Coffee | Demand for coffee grows, and rainforests pay the price

As the global demand for coffee increases, coffee plantations are replacing rainforests at an ever-increasing rate. Global warming is forcing new and established plantations to cooler locations at higher altitudes, causing the destruction of more and more rainforest. When people think of deforestation, they often think of palm oil or soybeans but not their daily cup of coffee. The ingredients used by Northern Wonder do not contribute to deforestation, and the ‘footprint’ of its bean-free coffee also has a lower environmental impact than regular coffee. The product is much more environmentally friendly when it comes to water, land use, and kilometers travelled.

One million euros invested 

It took two years to develop Coffee Free Coffee. The start-up has already secured a million euros in funding from Oost NL and others and is seeking additional investment for further growth in 2023. After the initial launch, Northern Wonder will continue to develop the product’s flavor. The team is also working on additional products, such as an espresso blend, iced coffee in cans, and a whole bean version for use in bean-to-cup machines.

David Klingen, CEO Northern Wonder: “The coffee industry has already introduced many effective initiatives to combat deforestation, but our product is truly turning the coffee world on its head. We thought: if food technologists can make meat without the meat, it should also be possible to make coffee without the coffee beans. An important starting point was that everyone should be able to keep the coffee rituals they love but without the bitter aftertaste of deforestation. We will make sure that in a few years, our coffee will be as mainstream as meat substitutes.”
