Cheese fondue restaurant Smelt returns to the Westerpark in Amsterdam
Cheese fondue restaurant Smelt (Dutch for melt) reopens its doors for their second season in Amsterdam. After a six-month absence from the Westerpark, the restaurant is back. Smelt will once again serve its classics, such as Swiss fondue, Dutch fondue and new this year the Italian fondue, during the dark winter months.

Cheese fondue restaurant Smelt | Cheese fondue with sourdough bread and steamed seasonal vegetables
The Swiss fondue consists of great mountain cheeses and the Dutch fondue is made from home-grown cheeses such as Le Petit Doruvael and Twentse Bunkerkaas. New this year is the Italian fondue made with Provolone Piccante, Parmigiano Reggiano, Fontina and Taleggio. All fondues are served with crusty sourdough bread from Fort Negen (Nine) and fresh steamed seasonal vegetables.
Owner Matthijs Visscher on the return of Cheese fondue restaurant Smelt Westerpark: “We have worked very hard this summer to improve the restaurant on every level. The food, the service and, of course, the location. We share the premises with an ice cream parlour. A good combination, but you have to build your restaurant from scratch every winter. I am very happy with the improved kitchen and a great terrace. We are ready for the chilly, cold and cheesy months!”
Not a fondue lover? The menu also includes surprising starters and desserts such as caramelised sausage, bruschetta’s with pickled vegetables, artichoke cream with roasted hazelnuts, pâté en croûte and stewed pear with crème cru. Furthermore, the restaurant offers gluten-free options on request and a vegan cheese fondue based on fermented cashew nuts. Smelt Westerpark will reopen daily from the 19th of October, Monday to Friday from 17:30 – 23:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 – 23:00.
Café De Doffer X De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam | Restaurant Smelt
Smelt originated as a collaboration between Café De Doffer and De Kaaskamer van Amsterdam – opposite neighbours for over a quarter of a century and a household name in the Nine Streets area. Since January 2022, the two businesses have merged into restaurant Smelt – the place where you enjoy the best cheese fondue from the Kaaskamer in the warm and homely cosiness of De Doffer. Located in a former coffee roastery in Westerpark, Smelt Westerpark is the second establishment in Amsterdam.
