CaliBurger | Pilot of ordering and paying with facial recognition

CaliBurger has partnered with NEC Corporation of America to roll out self-ordering kiosks using NeoFace® facial recognition software. This software is used to identify registered customers and pull up their loyalty accounts and order preferences. The kiosk pilot program is now at CaliBurger’s Pasadena location, where the Quick Serve Restaurant chain showcases new technologies developed by its parent company, the Cali Group. The new facial recognition self-ordering kioks were on display at the NRF 2018 in New York last week.

Mongee Banana, pronounced as ‘mon-gay’, is a new fruit product from Japan and has an edible peel. The name ‘Mongee’ means ‘incredible’ and is grown by D&T Farm in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture. They use the ‘Freeze-thaw’ awakening method, which allows the tropical fruit to grow in Japans cooler climate.

The cauliflower as substitute for chicken

Early November I received an app from my daughter from New York with the question if I had already written about the trend ‘cauliflower as substitute for chicken’. Seems to be popular in New York and you have to think of cauliflower prepared as buffalo wings or dishes like ‘General Tsao cauliflower’ instead of chicken. Since then I came across a couple of examples, time to start being creative with cauliflower as substitute for chicken!

More and more restaurants and wine bars open with the focus on a ‘relaxed atmosphere’. No culinary delights but great products and a nice glass of wine. Recently the wine café Alex + Pinard has opened in Amsterdam. The idea for the wine bar came from chef Nathaniel Zuijderwijk and sommelier Sanna Burggraaf, they were looking for a place to relax and drink a good glass of wine with quality, tasty food but couldn’t find. Long Story Short is a new hostel in Czech Republic, but it is hard to tell that it is a hostel. The industrial look and original design give the hostel a modern an exclusive appearance. Nevertheless, is it possible to have a relatively low priced overnight stay in a dorm or private room. A perfect example of the current trend in the hostel industry where luxury is getting a higher priority.
Self-exploring wine bar concept, ‘By The Glass’| Rayleigh & Ramsay in Amsterdam

With the opening of Rayleigh & Ramsay in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has a unique wine-café, which focuses on independent wine exploration. The concept is similar to Vagebond Wines in London. They offer as many as 100 wines within eight taste profiles per trial cap, half a glass or a whole glass. Prices range from € 0,70 to € 15,-. The wines are presented in wine dispensers from which the guest can ‘tap’ with a pre-paid card. All wines can be evaluated and ordered online. Next to London and Amsterdam, this concept can be found in Riga, Geneva and Mauritius as well. Advisor and wholesaler of this concept is the Dutch organization By The Glass International.
