With their brand new concept ‘Street Art Sundays’, restaurant Coulisse with one Michelin star and streetart Frankey is breaking through all the conventional bubbles of gastronomy. On three Sunday afternoons, several artists from Amsterdam will explore their intersections with fine dining. In the process, Coulisse’s team will surprise guests with unique dishes and unexpected flavours. As curator of these afternoons, streetart Frankey himself will kick off February 25. In this first edition, aptly titled ‘Gum under the table’, he shares his fascination with chewing gum, as the most useless and cheerful food product of all time.

Restaurant Coulisse X streetart Frankey

The broadly smiling Michelin man as an ode to the first Michelin star restaurant Coulisse received, was the first time streetart Frankey and the owners of Coulisse and childhood friends Tim van der Molen and Simon Witmaar met each other. Chef Tim van der Molen previously worked at the restaurant Noma (***) in Copenhagen and maître Simon Witmaar learned the trade at Sergio Herman’s restaurants. Because of their shared passion for all things adventurous gastronomy, and the constant drive to expand their creative horizons, the collaboration with Frankey tasted like more.

Tim van der Molen: “People know us mainly for an extended evening out with a full-length program, where you are completely pampered. This is wonderful and also what we fully propagate, but sometimes we want something completely different. With ‘Street Art Sundays’, we throw fixed expectations and rules overboard. We put the guests and ourselves to the test by changing the space, the artist’s input and just this once not specifically just through the food.”

Street Art Sundays kicks off with ‘Gum under the table’

In the foyer of the restaurant on the first floor, three artists will present their uncommon take on our food culture during ‘Street Art Sundays’. Each edition, curated by streetart Frankey, will focus on a self-chosen theme and one central work. With Frankey’s distinctive wink and the stunning culinary skills of the Coulisse team, the Sundays with these tastemakers guarantee cheerful informal afternoons, full of inspiration, disruption, new insights and a heavy dose of top-level dining pleasure. As icing on the cake, this first edition the new funk band ‘Cindy’ of Xander Vrienten, Martijn Bosman and Valentijn Bannier will provide the music.

The Street Art Sundays will be organized on February 25, March 24 and April 21 2024, from 15:00h to 18:00h. There are 100 spots available per edition. All guests will receive a unique signed artwork by the artist (edition 100) afterwards. There will also be room for drinks with the artists and chefs. Cost for the afternoon (entrance, artist talk, a standing street food meal and welcome drink) is €65. The artists for the March and April editions will be announced later. ‘Gum under the table’

Back in 2008, Frankey showed off his love for chewing gum by pouring out a million gum balls on Dam Square. In 2021, he even dedicated an entire exhibition to it. That his fascination with chewing gum is far from exhausted, he now proves with ‘Gum under the table’. Frankey explains: “I like to make people look at everyday things in a different way, hoping for a smile. In this, restaurants and food are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. From the wine stain in the tablecloth and the obligatory candle, to the piece of chewing gum under the table. Especially the latter makes me laugh. Because who ever came up to stick it there? And is chewing gum actually food? You put it in your mouth, taste it, chew it, but do NOT swallow it. If that’s not fascinating, I don’t know what is!”
