A new spin off by McDonald’s, CosMc’s
In August of this year we read about the first rumours that McDonald’s would introduce a new spin off called CosMc’s. Now the news is in the open and they started to trial in the first location Bolingbrook, Illinois. It’s opening today! The concept is based on CosMc, a McDonald’s-craving space alien, who first appeared as a character in the late 80’s and early 90’s promotional advertisements. CosMc’s is a new small-format, beverage-led concept that’s inspired by nostalgia and powered by a menu of bold, refreshing beverages and tasty treats.

What we know about CosMc’s so far
As part of a limited test, the first CosMc’s location opened today in Bolingbrook, Illinois, with a handful of additional outposts planned in the coming months. CosMc’s seamlessly blends brand-new, otherworldly beverage creations with a small lineup of food, including a select few McDonald’s favourites. CosMc’s menu is rooted in beverage exploration, with bold and unexpected flavor combinations, vibrant colors and functional boosts. A range of specialty lemonades and teas, indulgent blended beverages and cold coffee – think Sour Cherry Energy Slush, Tropical Spiceade and S’mores Cold Brew. Make it yours with customizations at every turn: popping boba, flavor syrups, energy or Vitamin C shots, and so much more.
A small lineup of food
On the food front, McDonald’s indicates that we can expect savory offerings including a Spicy Queso Sandwich, Savory Hash Brown Bites and Pretzel Bites served with dipping sauces. On the sweet side, there’s a Blueberry Lemon Cookie Sundae and Caramel Fudge Brownies, to name a few. And of course there are a few McDonald’s classics on the menu.
The McDonald’s company indicates that the CosMc’s also has its own uniquely seamless digital and Drive Thru experience. Guests are invited to take a break from earthly stressors and use the dynamic menu boards and cashless payment devices to breeze through the ordering and payment process, allowing for guided exploration and customization along the way. Drive Thru pickup windows are assigned once your order is ready. They say that they’re exploring how to solve the 3pm slump by lifting humans up with every sip.
Although McDonald’s already has the McCafé coffee brand, which provides some beverage options within its stores, we think that CosMc’s is expected to focus more on its drinks menu with their unique new offerings and thus being more competitive with for example Starbucks. By the end of 2024, they plan to open approximately 10 CosMc’s pilot locations.
