One of our favorite cocktails, the negroni, has its own international week! Annually the negroni is placed in the spotlight, this year from September 18 to 24. This iconic drink takes center stage in various bars all over the world. A number of cocktail bars in the Netherlands also pay attention to this drink! Want to make it yourself? The negroni is a bittersweet Italian drink
The Negroni originated in Florence, Italy, in 1919, where Count Camillo Negroni ordered an Americano, a popular cocktail at the time. “But,” the Count requested bartender Fosco Scarselli, “a little stronger.” Scarselli replaced the soda water with gin and made the first negroni, consisting of equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth and gin. This was not only appreciated by the Count, the new cocktail quickly became very popular. Below is a list of where you can enjoy a negroni in the Netherlands!
Ultramarijn in The Hague | They make a Kingston negroni
Cocktail bar Ultramarijn is a nice place in the center of The Hague. One where you end up in a fantasy world that Jules Verne would have loved. The cocktails are created by professional bartenders who are inspired by exciting voyages of discovery across the sea and exotic destinations. Their Kingston negroni is made with Jamaican rum, vermouth and Campari.
Botanero in Rotterdam
At Botanero on the Mariniersweg in Rotterdam you are able to enjoy delicious cocktails made by passionate bartenders. They prefer to make their drinks with homemade ingredients, such as lemon sorbet and grapefruit-rhubarb soda with jasmine. Sounds good, right? They also have their classics. From margarita to old fashioned and from pornstar martini to, of course, negroni. Botanero’s version is a favorite of many regular guests, and for good reason!
LuminAir in Amsterdam | Even a Negroni Analcolico
LuminAir, the new (cocktail) kid in town, has developed four different negroni drinks especially for Negroni Week. All four with their own unique character. The Drunken Monkey is sweet and floral with lavender and vanilla, the Vaquerois is smoky and spicy due to the mezcal and Szechuan peppers, the Santa’s Negroni literally incorporates the famous DoubleTree cookie and is therefore creamy and sweet. Finally, for the alcohol-free fan, there is the Negroni Analcolico with Zero aperitif and orange sec. Something for everyone, in a beautiful setting with a view over Amsterdam.
Hotel bar COCO in The Weeshuis (orphanage) in Gouda
Relais & Châteaux Weeshuis Gouda is located in the middle of the old city center of Gouda and is an oasis of peace where you can not only sleep like a king, but also drink a very good negroni in the hotel bar COCO. COCO serves the negroni according to a classic recipe, with gin, red vermouth, Campari and of course a piece of orange peel. The romantic setting of COCO alone is worth an evening at the bar!
The Lemonman in Amsterdam | Fig negroni
Okay, normally you complete this drink with orange, but at The Lemonman they know what to do with this cocktail! They have a few specials on the menu especially for this week, such as the fig, made with gin, vermouth, bitters, walnut bitters and a balsamic cream with dates and figs. The Lemonman is located above the eastern Mediterranean restaurant NENI Amsterdam and is the perfect place for an aperitif or nightcap!
Make it yourself
Get started at home and serve this autumnal version to your friends! Ingredients: 30 ml Bareksten Botanical Gin – 20 ml Campari – 20 ml Carpano Antica Formula vermouth – 2 dashes Angostura Cocoa Bitters – 1 dash Angostura Bitter Orange.
Place all ingredients in a chilled container with ice and stir until everything is mixed. Garnish with an orange peel, if you like dipped in dark chocolate.
