New record | 35 gold medals at Wine Competition of the Low Lands
The number of gold medals in the Wine Census of the Low Lands has never been as high as this edition. No fewer than 35 of the 271 wines submitted were awarded gold by the Weinbauamt in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. With the fine harvest of the sunny summer 2022 and growing knowledge and experience, Dutch and Belgian vineyard owners are proving that their wines are competing at an international level. This year, 61 vintners took part in the wine competition: 15 from Belgium and the rest from the Netherlands. There are not three, but as many as six vineyard owners who won the title of Best Winemaker of the Wine Competition of the Low Countries 2023. This prize of honour goes to vineyard owners who have made wines from white and blue grapes and received the highest scores for the three best wines (at least 1 white and 1 red or rosé). Big winners are the Betuws Wijndomein, Wijngaard Hesselink, Wijndomein St. Martinus, De Nieuwe Fontein, Keulenhof and Wijngaard De Koen. An honorary mention goes to Wijndomein Kitsberg from Belgium. Chef Jonnie Boer is the new brand ambassador of Urban Cultivator
Simultaneously with the launch of Librije Backstage this year, Thérèse and Jonnie Boer of the Dutch restaurant De Librije (***), also introduced vertical farming to their kitchen with the Urban Cultivator. The Urban Cultivator is a revolutionary all-in-one kitchen garden, in which 100% organic micro-vegetables and herbs are grown vertically. Jonnie Boer on the Urban Cultivator: “By growing instead of buying, you can determine the number of micro-vegetables and herbs yourself, so nothing is thrown away and costs are saved. Transport is no longer needed, which immediately makes it more environmentally friendly, and you therefore have vegetables that are extremely fresh throughout the year.” They are also experimenting with growing vegetables in their kitchen themselves. For instance, he discovered that growing on soil instead of cotton wool greatly improves the flavour and strength of vegetables. More info on the Urban Cultivator can be found in an previous article about their product in the link in the title or at their website.
